Exterior Staining

Staining your home or deck can not only enhance the beauty to your space, but also add a layer of protection to your wood surfaces. Rain, snow, even sunlight can wreak havoc on wood, not only ruining the appearance but potentially compromising the structure of the wood itself.

Just like painting, there are dos and don'ts involved with applying stain. Stain is a combination of resins and oils, pigments for color, additives that can improve performance and solvents that make it possible for the stain to penetrate the wood surface it’s applied to. While you can imagine all the different combinations that must exist of those ingredients, the basic way we break down stain into categories is oil based and water based. (Oh and just to add to all the stain fun, there are newer hybrid versions too!)

If you’re looking to stain a wood surface at your house, here are a few questions to consider when deciding on what type of stain to choose:

  1. What, if anything, is the wood currently coated with? (keep in mind structures that are newer may require time to “season” before stain can be applied)
  2. How much grain do you want to see?
  3. Where is it located with relation to the sun?
  4. How worn is the current stain?
  5. What kind of wood is it?

Our team is trained in the proper application techniques for stain:

  • We inspect your home’s exterior to repair, sand and otherwise manage any defects or trouble spots in the surface.
  • Just like with paint, we then clean your home or deck’s exterior to remove any dirt, grease, mildew, etc.
  • Protect any surfaces including any landscaping, driveway or entry surfaces that aren’t on the list to stain.
  • We apply 2 coats of stain to ensure an even, vibrant coat and seal.

We’ve given you a lot to think about here, so if you want to chat about it, give us a call or send us a message today for a free consultation and estimate.
