Cedar Shake Shingle Replacement

Cedar Shake Shingle Replacement

First of all, let’s get this question out of the way: What the heck is the difference between a wood shake and a wood shingle?!

Wood shingles are sawn on both sides, making them smoother, but thinner at the butt end when compared to a shake. Wood shakes are typically sawn on one side and hand split on the other side, making them thicker than wood shingles, and rougher in appearance.

Just like any exterior surface, shakes and shingles are susceptible to damage from the elements and from pests. Also, depending on the placement and location of the shingles, they will not all age in the same manner. This means you’ll likely have need for replacement of some of them before it would be time for a full tear-off and replacement.

Much like a typical wood board replacement, shingle or shake replacement follows a similar process to ensure the work is done right. Our team inspects the damaged wood to determine the cause of any rot or damage. This helps to make sure you’re aware of any underlying issue and that if it’s a bigger problem, you are equipped with the knowledge of what’s going on so you can determine how to tackle the root cause.

Next, we remove the damaged pieces without causing any damage to the surrounding area. Once removed, we’ll inspect any wood underneath the damaged sections to ensure no deeper damage has taken place. Well then reattach the new shakes or shingles and then your home is ready for a fresh coat of paint or stain to seal and protect the surface and ensure a seamless, even look with the existing shakes or shingles.
